Overview
Enamel, engraving and half-pearls on one case
The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts pocket watch Pearls, reference 999/100G-001, a unique piece in white gold with enamelled volutes set with 224 sapphires, 647 diamonds and 162 half-pearls, a blue flinqué dial, and a sapphire crystal back. Manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS IRM with small seconds and power-reserve indication; 48.7 mm, 9 mm high.
The reference 999/100G-001 is a pocket watch from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece in white gold that the brand presents as a gathering of the collection's techniques on one object, after the historic pocket watches set with pearls and diamonds. The case is 48.7 mm across and 9 mm high with a sapphire crystal back, humidity- and dust-protected only and not water-resistant. It is delivered with a white gold stand under blue and black ceramic in concentric ellipses, set with 362 diamonds (4.45 cts), on an oval black obsidian base; and with a white gold chain suspending a medallion set with 56 diamonds (0.21 ct) and holding a pearl (1.17 cts).
The two backgrounds and the case band were hand-engraved first to the pattern of the design. The enameller then drew the volutes in cloisonné with about 0.52 m of gold wire (around 0.52 g) and filled the cells with enamel in two colours, one transparent and one opaque, in several coats — 10 firings at 800°C to 805°C. The gem-setter finished the case with graded rows of 224 sapphires (1.47 cts) and 647 diamonds (2.35 cts) and with 162 half-pearls (8.19 cts) of different diameters; the bow is enamelled in transparent blue and set with 58 diamonds (0.13 ct). The dial is flinqué: snailed and sunburst guilloché cut by hand, then hand-engraved, under coats of translucent blue enamel, with hour markers set with 12 round diamonds (0.25 ct) and leaf-shaped hands in white gold. The movement is the manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS IRM with small seconds and a power-reserve indication: 38.65 mm across, 3.8 mm high, 158 parts, 20 jewels, a Breguet balance spring at 18,000 semi-oscillations an hour, at least 36 hours of reserve and the Patek Philippe Seal.
For collectors
It is the one Rare Handcrafts pocket watch with a complication — the power-reserve indication of the LEP PS IRM — and the one with a sapphire crystal back, so the movement is meant to be seen; and Patek Philippe counts the setting component by component, 224 sapphires, 647 diamonds and 162 half-pearls on the case alone, with the half-pearls carrying the most weight at 8.19 cts.
