A tropical forest in cloisonné enamel

The reference 10045M-001 is a small dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, one of a limited edition of five pieces, whose enamelled panels are an imagined tropical forest — foliage of every kind, layered to read as depth. Patek Philippe presents it as a study in the variety of jungle leaf, worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel in greens, blues and blacks only.
Cloisonné enamel is drawn first in wire: the enameller laid about 16 m of gold wire (around 24.48 g) to outline the vegetation, then filled the cells with transparent and opaque enamels in 12 colours, all of them blends of green, blue and black, building the layers so that the monochrome reads as relief. Each enamelled plate went through 8 to 10 firings at about 840°C. The hour circle carries a gilt sunburst with applied Arabic numerals in blue lacquer and gilt leaf-shaped hands. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.

A limited edition rather than a unique piece, and the smaller of the two dome sizes in the collection — 152.35 mm against the full-size clocks — with the enamelling counted in figures Patek Philippe gives: 16 m of wire, 12 colours, 8 to 10 firings a plate.
