Overview
Mariachi and marigolds for the Day of the Dead
The Patek Philippe small dome table clock Day of the Dead, reference 10046M-001, one of a limited edition of two in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, mariachi among marigolds, numerals lacquered in 6 colours; 152.4 mm high, 92.6 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 10046M-001 is a small dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, one of a limited edition of two pieces, whose panels show mariachi musicians in costume among cempasúchil, the orange marigolds of Mexico's Día de Muertos. Patek Philippe presents it as an homage to that festival, worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with silver leaf beneath the colour.
The outlines of each musician and each flower were drawn in wire — about 46.82 m of gold (around 23.77 g) — and the cells filled with transparent, opaque and semi-transparent enamels in 25 colours, with 2 colours of miniature painting on enamel for the finer work. Silver leaf embedded under the translucent enamel, the paillonné technique, is what gives the scene its light. Each enamelled plate needed some 14 firings at 770°C. The hour circle carries a rhodium-plated sunburst with applied Arabic numerals lacquered in 6 colours and rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
The wire length Patek Philippe gives is 46.82 m, as the musicians' costumes and the marigolds are all outline; the edition is two pieces.
