Overview
A bull in marquetry, with an elm burl dial
The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts pocket watch Bull, reference 995/152J-001, a unique piece in yellow gold with a bull in wood marquetry on the case back, an elm burl dial with red-lacquered yellow gold markers, and a red spinel cabochon crown. Manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds; 45 mm, 9.72 mm high.
The reference 995/152J-001 is a pocket watch from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece in yellow gold whose case back shows a bull at the moment it leaves the pen for the ring. The case is 45 mm across and 9.72 mm high with a solid back, humidity- and dust-protected only and not water-resistant. It is delivered with a yellow gold stand carrying a hand-engraved epaulette set with 8 red spinels (0.51 ct), after the matador's suit of lights, and a coiled gold motif ending in pendants of clustered red spinels (8.77 cts), on an oval base of Cameroon ebony; and with a yellow gold chain whose rope-style links carry two onyx spheres (0.75 ct) and a hand-engraved medallion set with a red spinel cabochon (0.02 ct).
The back is marquetry: 312 pieces of veneer and 40 smaller inlays in 39 species of wood, chosen for colour, texture and grain, with Patek Philippe singling out the head as the part that carries the detail. The dial is elm burl, so the wood continues to the front; the applied small-seconds counter and hour markers are yellow gold coated in red lacquer and hand-engraved with a rope motif, the hands are leaf-shaped in yellow gold, and the crown carries a red spinel cabochon (0.26 ct). The movement is the manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds: 38.65 mm across, 3.8 mm high, 157 parts, 18 jewels, a Breguet balance spring at 18,000 semi-oscillations an hour, at least 50 hours of reserve and the Patek Philippe Seal.
For collectors
The stand carries more stone weight than the watch: the clustered spinels on the stand come to 8.77 cts against the 0.26 ct cabochon on the crown.
