Overview

A bailaora in cloisonné over a flinqué ground

The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts pocket watch Flamenco, reference 992/198J-001, a unique piece in yellow gold with a flamenco dancer in cloisonné enamel over a flinqué ground on the case back, a red flinqué dial, and a red spinel cabochon crown. Manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds; 44.1 mm, 8.93 mm high.

The reference 992/198J-001 is a pocket watch from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece in yellow gold whose case back shows a flamenco dancer under a spotlight, her long dress spread by the movement. The case is 44.1 mm across and 8.93 mm high with a solid back, humidity- and dust-protected only and not water-resistant. It is delivered with a yellow gold stand carrying a hand-engraved fan in plique-à-jour enamel set with a red spinel cabochon (0.11 ct), on an oval black obsidian base set with a second red spinel cabochon (0.35 ct), and with a yellow gold chain suspending a hand-engraved fan medallion.

Three enamel techniques meet on the back. The ground is flinqué — a hand-cut sunburst guilloché under translucent enamel. Over it the dancer is cloisonné: 50 cm of gold wire (around 0.3 g) outlines the figure and the cells are filled with transparent, opaque and semi-opaque enamels in 13 colours. Her fan is then finished in miniature painting in 5 further colours. The back went through 20 firings at 760°C to 780°C in all. A floral frieze in hand-cut line engraving runs round the border of the back, the bezel and the bow. The dial is flinqué too, a circular wavy guilloché under translucent red enamel, with applied Breguet numerals and leaf-shaped hands in yellow gold; the crown carries a red spinel cabochon (0.26 ct). The movement is the manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds: 38.65 mm across, 3.8 mm high, 157 parts, 18 jewels, a Breguet balance spring at 18,000 semi-oscillations an hour, at least 50 hours of reserve and the Patek Philippe Seal.

For collectors

Patek Philippe gives the cloisonné in small figures — 50 cm of wire, around 0.3 g — because only the dancer is wired; the rest of the back is the flinqué ground. The Gemsetting block counts the two stand spinels together as 0.46 ct where the paragraph gives them as 0.11 and 0.35 ct.
