Overview
Landseer's stag in miniature painting on enamel
The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts pocket watch The Monarch of the Glen, reference 992/197G-001, a unique piece in white gold with Landseer's stag in miniature painting on enamel on the case back, a painted dial, and a boxwood cabochon crown. Manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds; 44.1 mm, 9.15 mm high.
The reference 992/197G-001 is a pocket watch from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece in white gold whose case back reproduces Edwin Landseer's oil painting The Monarch of the Glen — the stag against the Scottish hills — in miniature painting on enamel. The case is 44.1 mm across and 9.15 mm high with a solid back, humidity- and dust-protected only and not water-resistant. It is delivered with a white gold stand shaped after the stag's antlers, fitted with boxwood rings and standing on an oval boxwood base whose lower part is set with a boxwood cabochon, and with a white gold chain suspending an enamelled medallion bearing a Calatrava cross.
Miniature painting on enamel is painting in the strict sense: the scene was laid down in 14 colours, 6 of them blended shades, to reach the mist of the setting, the sheen of the coat and the grass, and then covered in several coats of flux, a transparent enamel, in what Patek Philippe calls the Geneva technique, which both protects the picture and deepens its colours. The back needed 21 firings at 800°C to 830°C. The dial takes up the mist in the same technique with 5 colours, 3 of them blended, under flux, fired 17 times over the same range; applied Breguet numerals and leaf-shaped hands are white gold, and the crown carries a boxwood cabochon rather than a stone. The movement is the manual-winding calibre 17''' LEP PS with small seconds: 38.65 mm across, 3.8 mm high, 157 parts, 18 jewels, a Breguet balance spring at 18,000 semi-oscillations an hour, at least 50 hours of reserve and the Patek Philippe Seal.
For collectors
Patek Philippe counts blended shades separately from the palette — 6 of 14 on the back, 3 of 5 on the dial — which is its way of measuring the painting rather than the colouring; and this is the one piece in the family whose crown, stand and base are all boxwood, so the set carries no gemstone at all.
