Overview
The Celestial with the sun's times
The Patek Philippe Grand Complications Celestial, Sunrise and Sunset, reference 6105G-001, in white gold with a sapphire crystal sky-chart dial and skeletonised baton hands, on an integrated black composite strap. Self-winding calibre 240 C LU CL LCSO with sunrise and sunset times, summer/winter correction and date by hand; 47 mm, 12.39 mm high.
The reference 6105G-001 is the Celestial extended to the sun. Beside the sky chart of Patek Philippe's astronomical watch it indicates the times of sunrise and sunset, and it carries correctors for the change between summer and winter time. Its white gold case, 47 mm across and 12.39 mm high, is finished in contrasting polished and sandblasted surfaces, with a pattern on the flanks and on the solid case back that Patek Philippe attributes to the design of space modules; it is water-resistant to 30 m. The sapphire crystal dial shows the exact configuration of the northern sky as seen from Geneva, the apparent movement of the stars and the phases and orbit of the Moon, and the date reads from a disc at the dial's edge, pointed to by a red varnished hand.
The calibre 240 C LU CL LCSO is the Celestial movement with the sunrise and sunset mechanism added; Patek Philippe says it took more than five years to develop and involved six patent applications. It is wound by a 22K gold off-centre minirotor and measures 38 mm across and 7.93 mm high, with 426 parts and 51 jewels, a Gyromax® balance and a Spiromax® balance spring at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour (3 Hz), and a power reserve of 38 to 48 hours under the Patek Philippe Seal. Hours and minutes of mean solar time are read on skeletonised baton-style hands in white gold, white varnished, and the sunrise and sunset times on hands of their own. An ellipse frames the portion of the sky visible from Geneva and from every city at the same latitude, and the movement also gives the times at which Sirius and the Moon cross the meridian.
For collectors
Among the Celestial references this is the one whose movement carries the sun's times and the seasonal correction, and Patek Philippe gives the measure of what that added: 426 parts, more than five years of development and six patent applications for a mechanism laid over a sky chart drawn for Geneva.
