Overview
A 24-hour alarm that strikes a gong
The Patek Philippe Grand Complications Chiming Alarm, reference 5322G-001, in white gold with a hobnail-guilloched caseband, lacquered navy blue dial with a black-gradient rim, on a navy blue composite strap. Self-winding calibre AL 30-660 S C with 24-hour alarm on a gong, date and sweep seconds; 41 mm, 12.22 mm high.
The reference 5322 is Patek Philippe's chiming alarm in the Grand Complications collection: a self-winding watch with date whose alarm can be set for any time within 24 hours and sounds through a hammer striking a classic gong. Patek Philippe presents it as its only water-resistant chiming watch and as a Calatrava. The white gold case, 41 mm across and 12.22 mm high, carries a hobnail guilloché around the whole caseband and on the pusher, skeletonised lugs and a sapphire crystal back, and is water-resistant to 30 m.
The calibre AL 30-660 S C is wound by a 21K gold central rotor and measures 31 mm across and 6.6 mm high, with 524 parts and 52 jewels; it runs at 28,800 semi-oscillations an hour (4 Hz) on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 42 to 52 hours, under the Patek Philippe Seal. The alarm time is shown digitally in an aperture, in 15-minute increments, with the alarm's on/off state and its day/night setting in apertures of their own; Patek Philippe counts four patents granted for the alarm and describes the setting as intuitive. Sweep seconds, and a date by hand in a sub-dial at 6 o'clock, complete the dial, whose applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands are white gold with luminescent coating.
For collectors
Patek Philippe's claim is a specific one: a chiming watch that is water-resistant, to 30 m. That, with the alarm read digitally in an aperture in 15-minute increments rather than by a hand, is what the reference brings that a minute repeater does not, and both are Patek Philippe's own points.
