Overview
A minute repeater that strikes local time
The Patek Philippe Grand Complications Minute Repeater, World Time, Rare Handcrafts, reference 5531G-001, in white gold with a hobnail-guilloched caseband and a Grand Feu cloisonné enamel dial centre showing a steamboat, on a shiny blue-green alligator strap. Self-winding calibre R 27 HU striking local time on two classic gongs; 40.2 mm, 11.49 mm high.
The reference 5531G-001 joins a minute repeater to Patek Philippe's World Time display, and the brand's claim for it is specific: the first minute repeater that always strikes local time — the time of the zone shown at 12 o'clock — through a patented striking mechanism. It is listed under Rare Handcrafts for its dial centre, a Grand Feu cloisonné enamel of one of the Belle Époque steamboats that Patek Philippe says still sail on Lake Geneva. The white gold case, 40.2 mm across and 11.49 mm high, has its caseband and slide piece hand-guilloched with a hobnail pattern and skeletonised lugs; it is humidity- and dust-protected only, with interchangeable solid and sapphire crystal backs.
The calibre R 27 HU is wound by a 22K gold off-centre guilloched minirotor and measures 32 mm across and 8.5 mm high, with 452 parts and 45 jewels; it runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour (3 Hz) on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, with 43 to 48 hours of power reserve, under the Patek Philippe Seal. The World Time gives a 24-hour and day/night indication for all 24 time zones on an 18K gold 24-hour ring around the enamel centre, with 4 gold spangles at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock; the strike, on two classic gongs, follows the zone at 12 o'clock. The hands are white gold, the hour hand skeletonised in the “Southern Cross” constellation motif and the minute hand lozenge-shaped.
For collectors
Patek Philippe makes two things particular here: a repeater whose strike follows the displayed local zone, described as patented, and a cloisonné dial that is a scene rather than a pattern — a steamboat on the lake — which is what puts a World Time reference under Rare Handcrafts.
