Overview
The ice floe and the aurora in cloisonné enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock North Pole, reference 20212M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, the animals of the ice floe under the aurora, 12 baguette-cut topaz markers on mother-of-pearl; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20212M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show the animals of the far North on the ice and beneath it — the brand names polar bears, penguins and killer whales — under the aurora borealis. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with silver leaf beneath the colour.
The animals were outlined in about 8.31 m of gold wire (around 16.4 g), and the blues of the North built in transparent, opalescent and opaque enamels in 41 colours; 3 further colours of miniature painting on enamel gave the veils of the aurora and a frosted finish to parts of the decoration, and silver leaf embedded under the translucent enamel, the paillonné technique, gives the polar light. Each enamelled plate went through 9 to 15 firings at 900°C to 930°C. The hour circle is white mother-of-pearl set with 12 applied baguette-cut hour markers in dark-blue topaz (2.55 cts), with rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and sculpted rhodium-plated stalactites hang from the circle as ice. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
The plates took 9 to 15 firings each, at 900°C to 930°C, for 41 colours that are all, by Patek Philippe's account, shades of blue; and the sculpted stalactites on the hour circle carry the subject into the metalwork.
