Overview
Jellyfish in grisaille enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Medusas, reference 20209M-001, a unique piece in grisaille enamel au blanc de Limoges showing jellyfish in the deep sea, with rhodium-plated baton markers on a white mother-of-pearl hour circle; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20209M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show jellyfish moving in the dark of the deep sea. It is made in a single technique, grisaille enamel au blanc de Limoges, which Patek Philippe says was chosen for the diffuse light of the depths.
Grisaille au blanc de Limoges is painting in white on dark: the blanc de Limoges, a white oil-based enamel, was drawn out and sculpted with a fine brush and a needle over a ground of translucent blue enamel, so that thicker white reads as light and thinner white as shadow — the tentacles and the fronds of algae are built this way, in monochrome. Tiny dots of white pearlescent paint stand for the ripples in the water. On the dome the rays of light are done in the Geneva technique, enamel under flux, a transparent enamel. Each enamelled plate needed 10 to 12 firings at about 780°C. The hour circle is white mother-of-pearl with applied rhodium-plated baton-style hour markers and rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
It uses no gold wire and no coloured palette: Patek Philippe's measure of the work is the firing count, 10 to 12 a plate, and the handling of the white, by brush and needle.
