Overview
Crocodiles by night in grisaille enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Siamese Crocodiles, reference 20214M-001, a unique piece in grisaille enamel au blanc de Limoges with gold powder, showing crocodiles among water lilies at night, with gilt tooth-shaped markers on black lacquer; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20214M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show Siamese crocodiles swimming at night among water lilies, which the brand presents as a tribute to a critically endangered species. It is made in grisaille enamel au blanc de Limoges, with the flowers' centres in gold powder.
The night is the ground: a midnight-blue translucent enamel over which the blanc de Limoges, a white oil-based enamel, was drawn out and sculpted with a fine brush and a needle. The monochrome carries the waves the animals make in the water and gives the lily pads their volume; gold powder on the centres of the flowers is the one contrast. Each enamelled plate needed 10 firings, at temperatures falling from 780°C to 740°C. The hour circle is black lacquer with applied gilt hour markers shaped after a crocodile's teeth and pierced lozenge-shaped hands in yellow gold, after the heads surfacing; the dial centre is a wavy sunburst under grey translucent enamel for the track a crocodile leaves on the water, and at the base of the clock the water lilies are applied jewellery ornaments on a ground of polished obsidian. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
The subject runs through every part Patek Philippe describes — teeth for hour markers, surfacing heads for hands, a wake for the dial centre, lilies on obsidian for the base — and the firings are the only enamel figure the brand gives, since grisaille has no wire and no palette to count.
