Overview
A yacht race on a Mercator globe
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Terrestrial Globe, reference 20207M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with miniature painting, charting a yacht race on a globe after Mercator's map, rhodium-plated trapeze hands; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20207M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels chart a round-the-world yacht race across a globe drawn after Gerardus Mercator's map, redrawn in a modern hand. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with the boats, the route and the relief of the continents in miniature painting.
The meridians and parallels were outlined in about 48.6 m of gold wire (around 22.96 g), as the whole globe is a grid. The seas, almost monochrome, took mainly transparent and opaque enamels in 8 shades; the boats, the dashed line of their route and the mountains of the continents were then painted in 4 colours of miniature painting on enamel. Each enamelled plate went through 14 firings at about 770°C. The hour circle is blue with a striated spiral pattern after ocean waves, with rhodium-plated baton-style hour markers and trapeze hands. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
48.6 m of wire against 8 shades of enamel: Patek Philippe's figures show a clock that is almost all drawing, the grid of the map, with the colour kept to a near-monochrome sea — the reverse of the carnival and garden clocks, where the palette does the work.
