Overview
A red silk kosode in cloisonné enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Red Kosode, reference 20205M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, after a red silk satin kosode and its embroidery, with burgundy-lacquered gilt Arabic numerals; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20205M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels reproduce a kosode — the narrow-sleeved Japanese garment of the kimono family — after a robe in red silk satin, with its embroidery of snowflakes, bamboo and plum blossom, which the brand presents as symbols of longevity, resilience and rebirth. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with gold and silver leaf beneath the colour.
The embroidery's outlines took about 30.83 m of gold wire (around 62.2 g), the heaviest wire Patek Philippe gives for any dome clock. The folds of the fabric were built in transparent, opaque and semi-transparent enamels in 14 colours as a trompe-l'œil, with 4 further colours of miniature painting on enamel for the embroidered ornaments, and gold and silver leaf embedded under the enamel in the paillonné technique to stand for the satin's sheen. Each enamelled plate went through 14 firings at close to 770°C. The hour circle carries a striated sunburst with applied Arabic numerals and leaf-shaped hands, both gilt under burgundy lacquer. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
The subject is cloth, not landscape, and it shows in the figures: 62.2 g of wire for the embroidery against a palette of only 14 colours, since the work is in the drawing of the folds rather than in colour — Patek Philippe calls the result a trompe-l'œil of the fabric.
