Overview
A lava flow in cloisonné enamel and slate
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Magma, reference 20202M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, a lava flow, 12 baguette-cut orangey-red sapphire hour markers on slate; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20202M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show a lava flow as an abstract composition — the cracked crust of the earth and the glow beneath it — in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with silver leaf under the colour.
The cracks were drawn in about 8.89 m of gold wire (around 23.66 g), the cloisons through which the glow shows. The lava itself took 5 colours of transparent enamel and 7 colours of miniature painting on enamel, with silver leaf embedded beneath the translucent enamel in the paillonné technique to light it from below; for the volcanic rock the enameller worked the surface with a needle to a matt black. Each enamelled plate went through some 15 firings at close to 770°C. The hour circle is slate, set with 12 baguette-cut applied hour markers in orangey-red sapphire (3.12 cts), with black leaf-shaped hands under orange lacquer, and the dial centre is a sunburst under reddish-brown enamel. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
The hour circle is stone rather than lacquer or mother-of-pearl — slate, for the rock — and the needle-worked matt black is a texture rather than a colour, which is unusual in a technique that is otherwise about glaze; the 12 sapphires (3.12 cts) are the only set stones on the piece.
