Overview
A carnival poster in 88 colours of enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Rio Carnival, reference 20201M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel in 88 colours with miniature painting, after an old carnival poster, with gilt Arabic numerals on purple lacquer; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20201M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels are taken from an old poster for the Rio Carnival — musicians and dancers in costume — in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with gold and silver leaf beneath the colour.
The figures were outlined in about 21.02 m of gold wire (around 38.87 g). The colour took transparent, opalescent and opaque enamels in 88 colours, with 11 colours of miniature painting on enamel for the brightest detail; gold and silver leaf embedded under the translucent enamel, the paillonné technique, pick out particular parts of the festival and light the whole. Each enamelled plate went through 8 to 10 firings at 910°C to 930°C. The hour circle is purple lacquer with applied gilt Arabic numerals and leaf-shaped hands in the same purple lacquer. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
