The first ascent of Everest in cloisonné enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Mount Everest, reference 20200M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, showing the first ascent with the climbers as applied figures and a hobnail hour circle; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20200M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show the first ascent of Mount Everest — the range, the climbers on the ice and a compass rose — in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, with the climbers themselves as applied jewellery figures on the wall of ice around the dial. Patek Philippe presents it as a tribute to the climb and to the mountain's hold on the imagination.
The mountains, the climbers and the compass rose were outlined in about 12.47 m of gold wire (around 18.56 g), and the cells filled with transparent, semi-transparent and opaque enamels in 21 colours; 7 further colours of miniature painting on enamel gave the mass and relief of the range, the line of the route and the falling snow. Silver leaf embedded beneath the translucent enamel, the paillonné technique, sharpens the cold light of the scene, and each climber is a hand-finished jewellery appliqué. Each enamelled plate needed 14 firings at about 770°C. The hour circle carries the hobnail (clous de Paris) pattern Patek Philippe calls the Manufacture's own, with applied Arabic numerals in blue lacquer and rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands with a blue lacquer centre; the dial centre is cloisonné enamel showing the summit's topography from above, and the clock's pillars are worked as coiled climbing rope. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
Three things beyond the panels mark this clock: the climbers are separate applied figures rather than enamel, the dial centre is a map of the summit in cloisonné, and the pillars are shaped as rope — so the subject is carried into the structure of the clock, not only its surfaces.
