Overview
Gaudí's scaled roof in cloisonné enamel
The Patek Philippe dome table clock The House of the Dragon, reference 20199M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel in 154 shades with miniature painting, after the scaled roof of Gaudí's Barcelona building, plique-à-jour hands; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20199M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece the brand presents as a tribute to Antoni Gaudí on the centenary of his death, and in particular to the Barcelona building whose tiled roof, laid like scales, is read as the dragon killed by St George, Catalonia's patron. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, with the fine detail in miniature painting and the hands in plique-à-jour.
Gaudí's forms, which Patek Philippe likens to Art Nouveau, were drawn in about 16.09 m of gold wire (around 28.88 g). The colour took 154 shades of enamel, mostly transparent with some opalescent and opaque, with 17 colours of miniature painting on enamel to render the crackle of the ceramic Gaudí worked in. On parts of the piece the enamel was built up for relief, a way of working Patek Philippe notes for its difficulty. Each enamelled plate went through 9 to 10 firings at 890°C to 910°C. The hour circle is circular-grained under white lacquer, its numerals and markers transfer-printed in 5 vivid colours to match the clock, and the stylised yellow gold hands are filled with plique-à-jour enamel, which is enamel without a backing so that light passes through it. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
154 enamel shades is Patek Philippe's figure, and it is the point of the piece: the mosaic surfaces of the building asked for more colours than any landscape, and the relief worked into the enamel and the plique-à-jour hands are the two techniques Patek Philippe adds beyond cloisonné and painting.
