Overview

The Geneva greenhouse in cloisonné enamel

The Patek Philippe small dome table clock Botanical Garden, reference 10051M-001, one of a limited edition of five in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with miniature painting, showing the Geneva botanical garden's greenhouse, with green-lacquered Roman numerals; 152.35 mm high, 92.6 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.

The reference 10051M-001 is a small dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, one of a limited edition of five pieces, whose panels show the large temperate greenhouse of the Geneva botanical garden — the plants inside it and the geometric ironwork that frames them, which the brand notes continues up onto the dome. The brand presents it as a tribute to the city and to the biodiversity the greenhouse keeps.

The plants and the greenhouse framework were outlined in about 13.35 m of gold wire (around 24.25 g); the cells were filled with transparent, opaque and semi-transparent enamels in 11 colours for the palms, cacti and succulents, and a further 20 colours of miniature painting on enamel gave the finer detail of the foliage and the sense of depth. Each enamelled plate went through 15 firings at close to 750°C. The hour circle is rhodium-plated and sandblasted with a striated border, with applied Roman numerals in green lacquer and rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.

For collectors

This is the clock whose painted palette outnumbers its cloisonné one — 20 colours of miniature painting against 11 of fired enamel in the cells — and the only small dome clock on which the drawing, the greenhouse's frame, runs onto the dome itself.
