Overview
A Meiji kimono in cloisonné enamel and gold leaf
The Patek Philippe small dome table clock Imperial Kimono, reference 10048M-001, one of a limited edition of five in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel with miniature painting, after a Meiji-era kimono, 12 amethyst hour markers on mother-of-pearl; 152.35 mm high, 92.6 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 10048M-001 is a small dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, one of a limited edition of five pieces, whose panels reproduce the embroidery of a purple kimono of the Meiji era held by the Tokyo National Museum: carp rising to the surface and willow branches moving in the wind, seen by moonlight. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with gold leaf beneath the colour.
The embroidery's outlines took about 46.47 m of gold wire (around 25.98 g). The purple and its shifts were built in transparent, opaque and semi-transparent enamels in 12 colours, with 5 colours of miniature painting on enamel for the sheen and softness of the silk, and gold leaf embedded under the translucent enamel — the paillonné technique — to mark the garment's richness; Patek Philippe credits the successive coats with the scene's depth. Each enamelled plate went through some 15 firings at about 770°C. The hour circle is white mother-of-pearl with 12 baguette-cut amethyst hour markers (1.8 cts) around gilt leaf-shaped hands, and the dial centre is a sunburst under translucent purple enamel. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
Patek Philippe gives 12 baguette-cut amethysts (1.8 cts) as hour markers on the mother-of-pearl circle, the amethyst chosen to match the kimono's purple, and the paillonné leaf is gold.
