Overview

Anticorodal aluminium bridges over a translucent case

The RM 59-01 Tourbillon Yohan Blake was presented in 2013 in a limited edition of 50 pieces, developed with the Jamaican sprinter who had joined the brand in July 2012 and had been running with a tourbillon prototype on his wrist.

Four bridges span the movement. They are machined from anticorodal aluminium Pb109 and carry the tourbillon carriage and centre-wheel pinion while tying the grade 5 titanium baseplate to the case. They are eloxed by anodic oxidation and then hand-painted green and yellow, the colours of the Jamaican flag, which also appear on the aluminium flange. The case is a translucent composite injected with carbon nanotubes, and is asymmetric: it thickens and extends between 2 and 5 o’clock so that the torque-limiting crown does not rub against the wrist.

Design and engineering

  • Calibre RM59-01Manual winding skeletonised tourbillon movement with hours and minutes. It measures 30.50 × 28.70 mm by 5.20 mm thick, runs on 19 jewels at 21,600 vph (3 Hz), and provides a power reserve of circa 48 hours. The tourbillon is 10.90 mm in diameter.
  • Anticorodal aluminium bridgesMachined from anticorodal aluminium Pb109 — an alloy of aluminium, magnesium, silicon and lead — the four bridges support the tourbillon carriage and centre-wheel pinion and consolidate the grade 5 titanium baseplate with the case. They are eloxed by anodic oxidation and hand-painted green and yellow, the colours of the Jamaican flag.
  • Variable-inertia balanceA Glucydur balance with two arms and four setting screws, a moment of inertia of 11.50 mg·cm² and an angle of lift of 53°, with an Elinvar balance spring by Nivarox and KIF Elastor KE 160 B28 shock protection.
  • Carbon nanotube caseThe composite is injected with carbon nanotubes and is translucent, so the calibre is visible through the case walls as well as through the crystals. Richard Mille cites the material’s shock-absorbing behaviour as the reason for its use around a central tourbillon.
  • Asymmetric case profileThe case is thicker on one side and tapers between 2 and 5 o’clock. The geometry keeps the crown clear of the wrist during sprinting; Yohan Blake wears the watch on his right wrist.
  • Torque-limiting crownLimits the torque that can be applied, protecting the movement from overwinding.
