A Carbon TPT® case with a sapphire and red gold dragon
The RM 57-03 Tourbillon Sapphire Dragon was introduced in 2019 and sold only through Richard Mille boutiques in Asia, in a limited edition of 55 pieces of which five have a sapphire case. This Carbon TPT® execution is the principal version of that edition.
The dragon is the point of departure from the earlier RM 57 watches: rather than being carved in gold, its body is cut from a block of sapphire by the Geneva engraving house Olivier Vaucher. The sapphire sections are joined to solid red gold components forming the head, tail, limbs and spine, and the tongue and eyes are hand-painted red to match the tourbillon endstone, a ruby set in a rose gold chaton.

Design and engineering
- Calibre RM57-03Manual winding tourbillon indicating hours and minutes, on a grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges, running at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) with a 48-hour power reserve. The baseplate is openworked in a spiral pattern.
- Sapphire dragonThe body sections are machined and polished from a block of sapphire by the Geneva engraving house Olivier Vaucher, who developed a polishing process for the material, then joined to solid red gold parts forming the head, tail, limbs and spine. Sapphire had not previously been used by Richard Mille for a figurative sculpture of this kind.
- Red-painted detailThe dragon’s tongue and eyes are hand-painted red, matching the ruby endstone of the tourbillon, which is set in a rose gold chaton.
- Carbon TPT® caseParallel carbon filaments in layers no thicker than 30 microns, stacked with the fibre orientation rotated between plies and consolidated under heat and pressure before CNC machining. The layering produces a striated surface pattern that differs on every case.
- Tonneau case and crystalsThree-part tonneau case measuring 42.70 mm across and 14.55 mm thick, with sapphire crystals front and back and a water resistance of 50 m.
- An Asia-only editionFifty-five pieces, sold through Richard Mille boutiques in Asia, five of them cased in sapphire rather than the composite.
