A tourbillon suspended on braided cable, behind laminated sapphire
Polo is a contact sport played at a gallop, and a conventional tourbillon would not survive it. The RM 53-01 answers that with two solutions at once: a movement suspended inside the case on braided cable rather than bolted to it, and a glass that cracks without shattering.
The laminated sapphire is a first in watchmaking — two sheets of sapphire separated by a thin polyvinyl film, developed with the sapphire specialist Stettler and borrowed in principle from automotive glazing. The case is Carbon TPT®, on a blue strap.

Design and engineering
- Laminated sapphire glassTwo sheets of sapphire separated by a thin polyvinyl film, carrying anti-reflective and UV coatings — a patent-pending Richard Mille exclusive developed with the sapphire specialist Stettler, and a horological first. Under the shockwave of a mallet strike it cracks without breaking apart.
- Cable-suspended movementThe calibre hangs within the case on braided cable rather than being bolted to it, so shocks reaching the case walls are absorbed before they reach the movement.
- Double baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titaniumThe doubled construction adds stiffness, which both protects the movement and keeps the going train running smoothly under load.
- Carbon TPT® casePunctuated by notches that reinforce its structural integrity.
- Free-sprung balanceGlucydur®, two arms and four setting screws, moment of inertia 11.50 mg·cm², angle of lift 53°.
- Tourbillon at 12.40 mmWith a 10.00 mm balance, both large relative to the compactness of the calibre.
