Overview
An armoured case for polo, with the movement tilted 30°
Polo produces forces no ordinary tourbillon would survive: the clash of horses and riders, and the mallet swung at full gallop. For Pablo Mac Donough, Richard Mille abandoned sapphire glass at the front of the watch altogether. In its place is a sculpted plate of titanium carbide with two raised arcs leading to two viewing windows — hours and minutes on the right, the tourbillon carrying the seconds on the left.
The movement itself is mounted at 30°, which both angles the display for reading from the saddle and moves the calibre out of the line of a direct blow. It is a limited edition of 15 pieces.

Design and engineering
- Titanium carbide front plateTiC is a titanium and carbon alloy rating 9.5 on the Mohs scale against diamond’s 10 — almost as hard as diamond, and used here for armour rather than for looks. Its complex shape required many hours of machining.
- Two viewing windowsIn place of a conventional crystal, set into the raised arcs of the armoured plate.
- Movement tilted 30°The calibre is mounted sideways in the case on an angled cage, which keeps it away from impacts and orients the display towards a rider looking down.
- Grade 5 titanium case structureThe armoured plate is integrated within a microblasted front bezel, caseband and back bezel — the titanium carbide is the PLATE, not the whole case.
- Compact calibreA highly skeletonised baseplate and bridges with a tightly arranged going train and winding barrel; because the movement is light and unified, it is less susceptible to the centrifugal and centripetal forces of a match.
- Validation testingThe skeletonised baseplate and bridges were put through intensive testing to confirm their resistance after cutting.
