Overview

The G-sensor reworked for competition

The RM 36-01 followed the RM 036 in 2014, developed with the rally driver Sébastien Loeb, nine times consecutive World Rally Champion. Where the RM 036 was addressed to road safety, the RM 36-01 was built for competitive racing, and Loeb wore it in WTCC competition. It was made in a limited edition of 30 pieces.

The G-sensor is reworked and moved. Its reset button sits at the centre of the round sapphire front, as a knurled disc held by visible screws, and the brown ceramic bezel rotates to set the value to be recorded — up to 6 G, comparable to the highest lateral loads recorded on a Formula 1 circuit. The bezel itself is graduated in degrees of rotation, printed in red, and the reading appears at 12 o’clock on an arc running from green to red.

Richard Mille records the construction as a technical departure: part of the movement sits on the baseplate while other components are attached to the rotating bezel and sapphire assembly, so that a moving element forms part of the timekeeping mechanism.

Design and engineering

  • Calibre RM36-01Manual winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes, rotary G-sensor, power-reserve indicator and function selector. Power reserve is circa 70 hours, indicated at 2 o’clock, with the function selector at 4 o’clock.
  • Rotating brown ceramic bezelTZP brown ceramic, made from aluminium oxide powder tubes injected at close to 2,000 bar, at 1,400 Vickers and holding a stable colour. Richard Mille records a long machining and grinding process with special diamond tools. It is graduated in degrees of rotation, printed in red.
  • CasebandAnthracite polymer injected with carbon nanotubes, which Richard Mille specifies as protection for the movement and tourbillon.
  • Caseback and fixed bezelGrade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium.
  • Movement partsGrade 5 titanium with black PVD treatment, set for contrast against the case materials.
  • Case construction47.70 × 17.37 mm, water-resistant to 30 m via two nitrile O-ring seals, assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant 316L stainless steel washers.
  • Dial and crystalSapphire dial 0.40 mm thick with anti-glare treatment on both faces; the bezel-side crystal is sapphire at 1,800 Vickers, 2.45 mm at the centre and 1.72 mm at the outer edges.
