Overview

A tourbillon that records deceleration

The Tourbillon G-Sensor RM 036 Jean Todt was presented in 2013 at the FIA awards ceremony in Istanbul, and is the watch on which Richard Mille’s mechanical G-sensor first appeared. It was made in support of Jean Todt and the FIA’s road safety campaign, and Todt directed the proceeds to that campaign and to the ICM Brain and Spine Institute.

The G-sensor is a purely mechanical accelerometer, developed and patented for Richard Mille by Renaud & Papi. Built from more than fifty parts across roughly 17 mm, it is mounted directly on the baseplate and translates the forces the wearer experiences into a reading on a scale at 12 o’clock, whose needle runs from green through yellow and orange into red as deceleration becomes severe. A pusher at 9 o’clock resets it to zero.

The purpose is unusual for the collection: rather than recording performance, it was intended to make a driver conscious of how hard they were braking. The dial is printed JEAN TODT LIMITED EDITION over a blue flange, with the tourbillon and small seconds at 6 o’clock and the function selector marked W, N and H.

Design and engineering

  • Carbon nanofibre baseplateThe movement is built in grade 5 titanium and ARCAP over a carbon-nanofibre baseplate, a combination Richard Mille specifies for resistance and flatness. The reverse of that baseplate forms the black ground visible behind the movement.
  • Function selectorMarked W, N and H, selecting winding, neutral and hand-setting.
  • FinishingPolishing, shot-blasting and satin-brushing across the movement components.
