Baseplate suspended on four braided steel cables 0.35 mm in diameter
The RM 27-01 carries its baseplate attached to the case by four braided steel cables just 0.35 mm across. Richard Mille describes the construction as adapted from suspended civil engineering structures, compressed into a few tens of millimetres. The combination of strength and flexibility protects the movement, which weighs 3.5 grammes.
The low movement weight comes from the materials: grade 5 titanium for the baseplate and tourbillon carriage, aluminium-lithium for the barrel bridges and gear trains. The case is carbon with a monobloc back, and its anthracite colour is a consequence of the high concentration of carbon nanotubes in the material. The edition runs to 50 pieces.
