The first tourbillon built to be played in
The RM 027 was developed with Rafael Nadal and debuted at the 2010 French Open. The design problem was specific: a tourbillon that could take the shocks of hours of play on clay — forces of several hundred g — while staying light enough that the player would not notice it. Richard Mille states that its existing designs in high-performance mechanics had to be rethought and retested entirely.
The case is a carbon composite and the movement is suspended within it on cables, an arrangement that absorbs impact rather than transmitting it to the calibre. Nadal tested the watch in match conditions and wore it in play. The edition runs to 50 pieces.
