Overview
Grand feu enamelled eye and flames in hand-carved 3N red gold
Presented at Watches & Wonders in Hong Kong in 2015, the RM 26-02 was designed and executed by Olivier Vaucher, a Geneva craftsman. The eye and the flames surrounding it are carved from 3N red gold using chisels made specifically for the work.
The colour comes from grand feu enamelling: the motif is painted onto the gold using rare oxides, then fired several times at between 800 °C and 900 °C, and finished with further layers of transparent lacquer fired the same way. The flames then receive micro-lacquerwork by hand. The bezel and caseback are black TZP ceramic, worked to a matt finish across the whole surface; the caseband is 5N red gold. The edition runs to 25 pieces, sold only through Richard Mille’s own boutiques.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Grand feu enamellingThe motif is painted on the gold with rare oxides and fired repeatedly between 800 °C and 900 °C, then covered with further fired layers of transparent lacquer. The successive layers produce the depth of the finished image.
- Hand-carved 3N red goldThe eye and flames are carved with purpose-made chisels before enamelling, and the flames are finished with hand micro-lacquerwork.
- Black TZP ceramicTZP ceramic resists scratching and has a low coefficient of thermal conductivity. It is worked at length here to hold a matt surface across the case, against which the hand-polished chamfers read.
- PVD-coated grade 5 titanium calibreBaseplate and bridges are grade 5 titanium with a PVD coating.
- Differential power-reserve indicationA red line on a differential-driven rotating disc between 10 and 11 o’clock.
- Torque-limiting crownSet in the red gold caseband, preventing accidental overwinding.
