A mechanical E6-B slide rule, in an edition of 30
The RM 039 was designed as a navigation aid for experienced pilots, using the materials and visual conventions of the aviation industry. Richard Mille describes it as having taken years longer than planned; the finished watch carries nearly 1,000 parts, some invisible to the naked eye, and required new processes for construction, assembly and regulation.
The functions are hours, minutes, seconds at 6 o’clock, a UTC display, an oversize date, a flyback chronograph with central seconds and minute counters, a 12-hour totaliser at 9 o’clock, a countdown mode, a function selector and a power-reserve indicator. The case is titanium, 50 mm across and 19.40 mm thick.

Design and engineering
- E6-B slide ruleA fixed bezel and a bi-directional rotating bezel, both carrying the scales of the E6-B flight computer invented in the 1930s by Lieutenant Philip Dalton. It calculates fuel consumption, flight times, ground speed, density altitude and wind influence, and converts between knots, kilometres, gallons, litres, feet, kilograms and pounds. The slide rule needs no power supply, which is why it remains in use.
- Flyback chronographStart and stop from the pusher at 10 o’clock; reset to zero at any point from the pusher at 8 o’clock without stopping the mechanism first.
- Countdown modeThe chronograph minute hand can be run as a countdown, activated by the pusher at 9 o’clock. An aperture at 7 o’clock reads ON in countdown mode and OFF in chronograph mode. The pusher at 4 o’clock sets the hand between 59 and 01 minutes — a light press advances it one minute, a firmer press five.
- Tourbillon with power-reserve indicatorManual winding, with the reserve displayed on the dial alongside the function selector.
- Case productionA turning operation of 1 hour 40 minutes is followed by more than 800 milling operations taking nearly 11 hours, with quality control between and after; the final check takes a full day per case. The five pushers, their components and the crown require ten days of machining, with repeated water-resistance testing and hand brushing and polishing — around two weeks to produce one case.
