Overview
Movement wheels cut from stone
The RM 018 was made to mark the 150th anniversary of Boucheron, the Place Vendôme jeweller founded in 1858, and the project came out of a friendship between Richard Mille and Jean-Christophe Bédos, then president of Boucheron. The two houses divided the work: the case and the movement by Richard Mille, the semi-precious and precious stones chosen and worked by Boucheron.
The result was a world premiere — a number of the wheels inside the movement cut from stone. Tiger-eye, jasper, black onyx and diamond were used across the series, and each wheel was given a sunray pattern created entirely by hand in Boucheron’s atelier at 26 Place Vendôme. The technique took around three years of development and testing, and required a high level of mathematical modelling to control the manufacturing process.
Every watch in the series is different, carrying its own combination of stones. This one is the Zebra Jasper.
The bezel is worked with deep vertical ridges, a reference to Boucheron’s Reflet watch, introduced in 1947. Because of the hand finishing and embellishment involved, the series was limited to 30 pieces in 18ct white gold.

Design and engineering
- Calibre RM018Manual winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes, seconds and power reserve. The movement measures 30.20 × 28.60 mm with a thickness of 8.70 mm, at 21,600 vph (3 Hz), with a power reserve of 48 hours. The tourbillon cage is 10.90 mm in diameter.
- Stone wheelsCut from semi-precious and precious stones and finished by hand at Boucheron with a sunray pattern. Stones used across the series include tiger-eye, jasper, black onyx and diamond; this example is Zebra Jasper. The stone settings are in white gold.
- Sapphire baseplateIn place of a conventional baseplate, the movement is carried on two fully transparent layers of synthetic sapphire.
- BalanceGlucydur®, two arms, balance wheel diameter 10 mm, moment of inertia 10 mg·cm², lever angle 53°, with an Elinvar balance spring by Nivarox and KIF Elastor KE 160 B28 shock protection.
- Barrel shaftNickel-free Chronifer (DIN x 46 Cr 13 + S), non-oxidisable, antimagnetic and hardened.
- Ridged bezelDeep vertical ridges cut into the white gold, after Boucheron’s Reflet range of 1947.
- CaseTonneau form in 18ct white gold, 48.00 mm long by 39.70 mm at its widest and 12.80 mm at its thickest, with a sapphire display back.
