Overview

Diamond-set Celtic knot woven through the movement

Presented in 2009, the RM 019 carries a diamond-set Celtic knot that passes over and through the movement, linking the winding barrel, the power-reserve indicator and the tourbillon in a continuous path. The hour and minute hands are placed asymmetrically within it. Richard Mille describes the design as drawing on the triskelion, a Celtic motif associated with water, earth and air.

The baseplate is black onyx. On the reverse, a small triskelion turns in time with the tourbillon, and the tourbillon endstone bridge on the onyx side is engraved with a triquetra knot. The RM 019 received the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève – Asia Edition in Singapore in September 2009. The reference was made in both 18k red gold and 18k white gold; which applies to this record is not established.

Design and engineering

  • Stone-set Celtic knotThe knot is a three-dimensional structure worked through the movement rather than applied to a dial, connecting the barrel, the power-reserve indication and the tourbillon.
  • Black onyx baseplateThe movement is built on an onyx plate, against which the metal components and the knot are read.
  • Differential power-reserve indicationThe indication uses a differential gearing system connected directly to the winding barrel. A red line etched on a moving disc shows whether the watch requires winding.
  • Triskelion on the reverseA small triskelion on the back of the movement rotates in time with the tourbillon.
  • Engraved endstone bridgeThe tourbillon endstone bridge on the onyx side carries an engraved triquetra.
  • Case finishingThe front bezel and caseback are brushed lengthwise, with bevelled and mirror-polished edges at every junction of surfaces.
