Overview
A spider that holds the movement together
The RM 19-01 sets a diamond-studded spider across the movement, and the creature is not decoration laid over the mechanism — it is part of it. The spider is 18K white gold, set with diamonds; its abdomen supports the bridges of the tourbillon and its legs support the two winding barrels.
The calibre is assembled around a black rhodium-plated 18K white gold baseplate set with black sapphires, which Richard Mille records as a first for the brand.
The watch was co-designed with Natalie Portman, a Richard Mille partner, and is referred to in coverage as the RM 19-01 “Natalie Portman”.
Richard Mille frames the subject deliberately. Spiders are often frightening at first sight, but they are a symbol of motherhood, being fiercely protective of their offspring, and they carry strong symbolic power in the myths of civilisations around the world.
The result required a long and difficult machining process followed by many hours of hand polishing and finishing, with the watchmaker working alongside the jewel setter. The edition is 20 pieces.
