Overview

Tubular movement architecture, 30-piece platinum edition

The RM 012 was the first watch in which the solid metal baseplate was abandoned and replaced by a structure of Phynox tubes. The working parts and the tourbillon are integrated directly into that tubular structure, which takes on the functions ordinarily performed by the baseplate.

Launched in 2006 in a limited edition of 30 numbered pieces in platinum, it won Richard Mille the Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève and the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie – Asia Edition. The calibre is a manual winding tourbillon indicating hours and minutes.

Design and engineering

  • Tubular structure in PhynoxThe baseplate is replaced by a structure of Phynox tubes. The tourbillon at 6 o’clock is suspended from a tubular X, and each wheel and organ is secured at the intersection of between two and four tubes.
  • Anticorodal 100The winding barrel, going train and tourbillon cage are made from the aluminium alloy Anticorodal 100 (AlMgSi1) — aluminium, magnesium and silicon — normally used in industrial engineering for skyscrapers, ships and sports cars.
  • Rigidity and resistanceThe tubular, angled configuration gives optimal stiffness and torsional rigidity, with resistance to thermal change, corrosion and shock. The architecture unites the functions of baseplate, movement and bridges into a single structure.
  • Development and assemblyTwo years of development and four prototypes preceded the final version. Assembly of the movement alone requires several months.
  • AwardsThe Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, and the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie – Asia Edition.
