Overview
The Golden Ellipse at 5.9 mm
The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, reference 5738P-001, in platinum with a diamond set at 6 o'clock, sunburst blue dial with white gold baton hour markers and cheveu-style hands, on a shiny navy blue alligator strap. Ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 with a 22K gold minirotor, hours and minutes only; 34.5 × 39.5 mm, 5.9 mm high.
The platinum execution carries a sunburst blue dial with baton-style hour markers and cheveu-style hands in white gold, and a diamond set into the case at 6 o'clock, on a shiny navy blue alligator strap with a platinum prong buckle. Patek Philippe presents it as the larger Golden Ellipse introduced for the model's anniversary.
The reference 5738 is the Golden Ellipse in its larger size: an elliptical case 34.5 × 39.5 mm whose proportions the brand draws from the golden section, 5.9 mm high, which Patek Philippe calls the thinnest watch in the collection. The dial is an 18K gold plate with a sunburst finish, applied baton-style hour markers and slim cheveu-style hands in the case metal, and nothing else — no seconds, no date.
The height comes from the movement. The self-winding calibre 240 is 2.53 mm high and 27.5 mm across, with 152 parts and 27 jewels, and winds through a 22K gold minirotor set off-centre and recessed into the movement rather than turning above it — the reason Patek Philippe calls it ultra-thin, and the reason the case is 5.9 mm. It runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of at least 48 hours, and carries the Patek Philippe Seal. The case back is solid, and the case is water-resistant to 30 m.
For collectors
The Golden Ellipse is defined by its case rather than by a complication: Patek Philippe gives the proportion (the golden section) and the height (5.9 mm) as its two facts, and the dial carries only hours and minutes.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Elliptical casePlatinum, 34.5 × 39.5 mm with proportions Patek Philippe derives from the golden section, 5.9 mm high, with a solid case back and a diamond set at 6 o'clock; water-resistant to 30 m. Patek Philippe calls it the thinnest watch in the collection.
- MinirotorThe calibre 240's 22K gold winding rotor is small and off-centre, recessed into the movement instead of sitting above it, which is what holds the calibre to 2.53 mm and the case to 5.9 mm.
- DialSunburst blue on an 18K gold plate, with applied baton-style hour markers and cheveu-style hands in white gold; hours and minutes only.
- Strap or braceletShiny navy blue alligator leather with square scales, closed by a platinum prong buckle.
