Champlevé enamel on the Golden Ellipse
The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Rare Handcrafts, reference 5738/51G-001, in white gold with a black champlevé enamel dial hand-engraved with arabesques and volutes, white gold cheveu-style hands and an onyx cabochon crown, on a hand-stitched black alligator strap. Ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 with a 22K gold minirotor; 34.5 × 39.5 mm, 6.58 mm high.
The reference 5738/51G-001 is the Golden Ellipse in white gold with a dial from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts: the 18K gold dial plate is hollowed out to form cavities, these are filled with black Grand Feu enamel — the champlevé technique — and the gold left standing in relief is then hand-engraved with arabesques and volutes. The case is the Golden Ellipse's 34.5 × 39.5 mm ellipse, its proportions drawn from the golden section, at 6.58 mm high, with a solid back and a crown set with an onyx cabochon, on a hand-stitched shiny black alligator strap with a white gold prong buckle. It is protected against humidity and dust only, not water-resistant.
Champlevé enamel is worked in the order Patek Philippe gives: the metal is cut away first, so the enamel sits in recesses and the untouched gold forms the drawing, and engraving the relief afterwards puts the detail on the gold rather than in the enamel. The movement is the self-winding calibre 240: 27.5 mm across, 2.53 mm high, 152 parts and 27 jewels, wound by a 22K gold minirotor set off-centre and recessed into the movement, running at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, with a power reserve of at least 48 hours and the Patek Philippe Seal. The case is 6.58 mm high on a 2.53 mm calibre.
For collectors
Patek Philippe lists the case as protected against humidity and dust only, not water-resistant, and at 6.58 mm high; the champlevé dial, in which the drawing is the gold left standing and the enamel fills the ground, is the reason for the reference. The engraving is on the relief gold, not on the enamel, so it reads in the metal's own colour against the black.
