A triple complication behind smoked sapphire
The Patek Philippe Grand Complications Minute Repeater, Tourbillon, Retrograde Perpetual Calendar, reference 5316/50P-001, in polished platinum with a blue metallised sapphire crystal dial and a black-gradient rim, on a navy blue calfskin strap. Manually wound calibre R TO 27 PS QR with retrograde date and moon phases; 40.2 mm, 13.23 mm high.
The reference 5316/50P-001 is, in Patek Philippe's account, a reinterpretation of a Patek Philippe classic: a manually wound triple complication — minute repeater, tourbillon and perpetual calendar with retrograde date — given a contemporary look by a platinum case and a sapphire crystal dial with blue metallisation and a black-gradient rim, a “smoked glass” effect through which parts of the movement can be seen. The case is entirely polished, 40.2 mm across and 13.23 mm high, with a diamond set at 6 o'clock; it is humidity- and dust-protected only and comes with interchangeable solid and sapphire crystal backs.
The calibre R TO 27 PS QR is hand-wound, 28 mm across and 8.64 mm high, with 506 parts and 28 jewels; it runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour (3 Hz) on a Breguet balance spring, with a power reserve of 38 to 48 hours, under the Patek Philippe Seal. The strike is on two classic gongs. The calendar is read through a one-piece applied white gold frame for the day, the leap year and the retrograde date — the date on an onyx inlay transfer-printed in white — with a second applied frame for the moon phases and the small seconds transfer-printed in white. Hour markers are faceted “obus”-style and the hands faceted dauphine-style, both in white gold.

Patek Philippe says the movement carries five complications, and heads the reference as a triple complication. The dial is a blue metallised sapphire crystal that shows glimpses of the mechanism, with an onyx inlay carrying the date.
