The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts Allegory of Music, reference 5278/50R-010, a unique piece in rose gold with a dial in miniature painting on enamel after Boucher, on a matte chocolate brown alligator strap. Self-winding calibre R 27 minute repeater chiming on two classic gongs; 42 mm, 10.74 mm high.
The dial of 5278/50R-010 is a miniature painting on enamel reproducing The Allegory of Music, the oil on canvas François Boucher painted in 1764. Patek Philippe describes the enameller building the picture in small touches from 19 base colours, 7 of them blended shades, to render the flesh tones, the folds of fabric and the hair, then sealing it under several layers of flux, a transparent enamel, by the Geneva method; the dial took 17 firings at 800°C to 830°C. It is a unique piece.
The reference 5278/50R is Patek Philippe's Calatrava minute repeater in the Rare Handcrafts collection: a rose gold case 42 mm across and 10.74 mm high, delivered with two interchangeable case backs, sapphire crystal and solid rose gold. Dauphine-style hands in rose gold show the hours and minutes.
Inside is the self-winding calibre R 27, the brand's minute repeater on an automatic base: 28 mm across, 5.05 mm high, 327 parts and 39 jewels, wound by a 22K gold off-centre minirotor that is itself guilloched. The repeater chimes the time on demand on two classic gongs, and the movement runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 43 to 48 hours. It carries the Patek Philippe Seal. Patek Philippe describes the case as humidity- and dust-protected only, not water-resistant.

Patek Philippe presents the calibre R 27 as a Grand Complication movement whose architecture and finishing are meant to be seen, which is why a sapphire crystal back is fitted and a solid rose gold back supplied beside it.
