The dial of 5278/50R-011 is wood marquetry: Patek Philippe describes 336 veneer parts and 18 smaller inlays cut and assembled from 17 species of wood, chosen for colour, texture and veining, to draw an electric guitar down to the strings, the bridge, the pickguard and the name Patek Philippe reflected on its sides. A grained calfskin strap in caramel brown with a patinated finish takes up the dial's colours. Patek Philippe presents it as a limited edition of ten watches.
The reference 5278/50R is Patek Philippe's Calatrava minute repeater in the Rare Handcrafts collection: a rose gold case 42 mm across and 10.74 mm high, delivered with two interchangeable case backs, sapphire crystal and solid rose gold. Dauphine-style hands in rose gold show the hours and minutes.
Inside is the self-winding calibre R 27, the brand's minute repeater on an automatic base: 28 mm across, 5.05 mm high, 327 parts and 39 jewels, wound by a 22K gold off-centre minirotor that is itself guilloched. The repeater chimes the time on demand on two classic gongs, and the movement runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 43 to 48 hours. It carries the Patek Philippe Seal. Patek Philippe describes the case as humidity- and dust-protected only, not water-resistant.

Patek Philippe presents the calibre R 27 as a Grand Complication movement whose architecture and finishing are meant to be seen, which is why a sapphire crystal back is fitted and a solid rose gold back supplied beside it.
