Overview

The classic manual chronograph

The Patek Philippe Complications Chronograph, reference 5172G-010, in white gold with three-tier lugs and guilloched pushers, a rose-gilt opaline dial with charcoal grey white gold numerals, on a shiny chocolate brown alligator strap. Manually wound calibre CH 29-535 PS with column wheel, horizontal clutch and an instantaneous 30-minute counter; 41 mm, 11.45 mm high.

This execution carries a rose-gilt opaline dial, which Patek Philippe presents as reinforcing the vintage spirit of the reference, with charcoal grey white gold applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands, both with white luminescent coating, and a tachymeter scale, on a shiny chocolate brown alligator strap with a white gold fold-over clasp.

The reference 5172 is Patek Philippe's manually wound chronograph in the Complications collection, the watch the brand calls the quintessential men's chronograph and a favourite among devotees of mechanical watchmaking. The case is white gold, 41 mm across and 11.45 mm high, in what Patek Philippe calls a vintage style: three-tier lugs, round guilloched pushers and a sapphire crystal 'box' glass.

The calibre CH 29-535 PS is the chronograph movement Patek Philippe describes as the first designed and made by the Manufacture itself, built on the traditional plan — a column wheel to command the functions and a horizontal clutch to engage them — with six patented innovations the brand counts without listing. The central chronograph hand runs with an instantaneous 30-minute counter, which jumps rather than creeps between minutes, and small seconds. The movement measures 29.6 mm across and 5.35 mm high, with 270 parts and 33 jewels, runs at 28,800 semi-oscillations an hour on a Breguet balance spring, has a power reserve of at least 65 hours with the chronograph disengaged, and carries the Patek Philippe Seal.

For collectors

Patek Philippe presents this reference as one prized by collectors, and gives the reasons in its own terms: the traditional column-wheel and horizontal-clutch construction with its patents inside it, and the vintage case with its box glass and three-tier lugs.
