udemars Piguet announced the end of the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 15202 in April 2021, and its calibre 2121 was retired at the end of that year. The 16202 replaced it in 2022, in the same ‘Jumbo’ case with a new movement, the calibre 7121. [1][2]
Choose the movement first, then the dial era. The 16202ST’s calibre 7121 gives 55 hours of power reserve against the 2121’s 40, and adds a patented quickset date. [2][3][4] At Phillips sales overseas, steel 15202STs made about A$76,717 to A$181,139 between December 2021 and November 2025. [5][6][17] The 2022 ‘50th Anniversary’ 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01 made about A$153,968 and A$195,720. [8][9] All are completed sales before Australian import GST, at the RBA rate of 8 October 2026. [7]
The case, the clasp and the look barely moved between the two, so the calibre and the dial decide it.
Summary
Audemars Piguet presented the Royal Oak 15202 on 30 March 2000 at the SIHH. It is 39 mm across, and its case is water-resistant to 50 m. [1][4]
The 16202 arrived in 2022 in steel, pink gold, yellow gold and platinum. The steel version launched as the 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01, the ‘50th Anniversary’ model with a ‘50-years’ oscillating weight. The 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02 is the current steel reference, and Audemars Piguet shows no price on either page. [1][10][11][12][13]
In January 2022 SJX reported the .01’s launch price at US$33,200 (about A$47,729), and Monochrome at EUR 32,400 including taxes (about A$52,191). [7][12][13]
This article is general information about the watch market. It is not a valuation of any particular piece, and it is not advice on whether to buy, sell or hold one.
Every watch HYPA offers, buys or sources is assessed on its own: authenticity, condition, provenance and completeness, in the market as it stands on the day.
How this guide was prepared
Specifications, dial history, service prices and the definitions of Audemars Piguet’s two documents come from Audemars Piguet’s own pages and its AP Chronicles history. Completed sales come from Phillips lot pages. Launch prices come from SJX and Monochrome, named and dated in the text. Conversions use the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 8 October 2026, and the import tax position comes from the Australian Border Force. All pages were read on 15 October 2026.

What separates the two Jumbos
Put the two watches side by side and the visible changes run out quickly. Both are 39 mm steel cases water-resistant to 50 m, and both close with the same double folding clasp. [1][3][4][13]
Audemars Piguet designed calibre 7121 to fit ‘the extra-thin 8.1 mm “Jumbo” case without altering its aesthetic and thickness’. Monochrome found the dial, markers and hands carried over unchanged, and side by side the two are hard to tell apart. [2][4][13]
So the choice rests on the movement and, for a 15202, the dial its year gives it; the documents then decide which piece.

Eden’s insight: which Jumbo would I point you to?
HYPA sells the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02 and 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01.A; this is my own view.
What separates the 15202ST and the 16202ST on the wrist?
On paper, very little: the same 39 mm steel case and the same double folding clasp. Audemars Piguet says it built the new movement to fit the 8.1 mm ‘Jumbo’ case without changing its look or its thickness. [2][3][13]
How much does the quickset date matter?
The 16202’s calibre 7121 runs 55 hours against the 15202’s 40, and its date sets directly. [2][3][4] If you rotate watches, that matters: a 16202 taken off on Friday evening is still running on Sunday night, when a 15202 would have stopped on Sunday morning. A 15202 has no quickset date, so resetting one that has stopped takes a while. [3]
Is every steel 16202 the same watch?
No. The 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01 is the 2022 ‘50th Anniversary’ with the ‘50-years’ rotor; the .02 is the current watch. Both steel 16202s Phillips sold between 2021 and 2025 were the .01. [8][9][10][11]
What do you check first on a 15202ST or a 16202ST?
The full reference on the papers against the watch. On a 15202, I check that the year fits the dial: Grande Tapisserie from 2000 until 2014, Petite Tapisserie from 2012. [1][13] Then I check which Audemars Piguet document comes with it. An Extract only confirms the numbers are in Audemars Piguet’s records; a Certificate of Authenticity follows an examination of the watch by its experts in Le Brassus. [19]
Inside: calibre 2121 against calibre 7121
The older movement has the longer story. The 2121 is a selfwinding movement with date, derived from calibre 2120, which Audemars Piguet released in 1967. It has a 40-hour power reserve and 36 jewels, measures 28.4 mm wide and 3.05 mm thick, and beats at 2.75 Hz. Audemars Piguet retired it at the end of 2021. [2][3][4]
Calibre 7121 replaced it. It measures 29.6 mm across and 3.2 mm thick, beats at 4 Hz and runs for 55 hours, about 38 per cent longer. Its balance is free-sprung, regulated by six adjustable weights. [3][4]
The date is the change a buyer notices. Audemars Piguet fits the 7121 with ‘a patented extra-thin date-setting system’, and says its ‘large barrel’ gives it more power than its predecessor. SJX notes that the date can be moved forward quickly, as on any modern watch. [2][3]
The dial: Grande or Petite Tapisserie, by year
The 15202 did not carry one dial for its whole run. At its launch in 2000, Audemars Piguet’s history records that ‘all these dials featured a guilloché Grande Tapisserie pattern’. [1]
Monochrome records a 2012 refresh that brought back the smaller Petite Tapisserie pattern, with the AP logo at six o’clock. Audemars Piguet’s history then notes: ‘In 2014, the 15202 Grande Tapisserie variants disappeared from the catalogue.’ So the year narrows the dial: Grande Tapisserie from 2000 until 2014, Petite Tapisserie from 2012; a 15202 from 2012 to 2014 may carry either. [1][4][13]
The 16202ST carries a ‘Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50’ ‘Petite Tapisserie’ dial on both steel suffixes. SJX records that its colour is now applied by physical vapour deposition (PVD), over a pattern cut on a hand-operated straight-line engine. [3][10][11]
What Phillips has sold, December 2021 to November 2025
Each Phillips figure below is the lot page’s ‘Sold for’ at a sale overseas, before Australian import GST, converted at the RBA rate of 8 October 2026. [7]
Phillips has sold the steel 15202ST six times in that period:
- December 2021, The 2021 New York Watch Auction, lot 84: a 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01 from 2016, US$126,000, about A$181,139. [5]
- May 2022, The Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIV, lot 806: an unworn 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01, circa 2017, HK$819,000, about A$150,030. [14]
- May 2023, The Geneva Watch Auction: XVII, lot 133: a 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01, circa 2012, with two original drawings by Octavio Garcia, CHF 60,960, about A$105,212. [15]
- June 2023, The New York Watch Auction: EIGHT, lot 8: a 15202ST, circa 2006, US$57,150, about A$82,159. [16]
- September 2025, The Geneva Sessions Fall 2025 online sale, lot 4: a 15202ST, circa 2020, CHF 44,450, about A$76,717. [6]

Phillips has also sold the steel 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01, the 2022 ‘50th Anniversary’ version, twice:
- November 2022, The Geneva Watch Auction: XVI, lot 83: circa 2022, CHF 113,400, about A$195,720. [8]
- December 2022, The New York Watch Auction: SEVEN, lot 5: with a certificate of origin dated 14 February 2022, US$107,100, about A$153,968. [9]
Two steel 16202s, and what ‘retail’ means
The steel 16202ST launched in January 2022 as the 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01. Audemars Piguet names it the ‘50th Anniversary’ and fits it with a rhodium-toned pink gold ‘50-years’ oscillating weight. SJX and Monochrome both reported launch prices for this .01 reference. [10][12][13]
The 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02 is the current steel reference, with the same ‘Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50’ ‘Petite Tapisserie’ dial and calibre 7121. Audemars Piguet shows no price on its page, as with the .01. [10][11]
That matters when a seller speaks of a premium, which is the amount over an edition’s retail price. For the .01, the press-reported launch price is that measure; for the .02, Audemars Piguet publishes none. If a seller quotes a figure ‘over retail’, ask which number they mean and where it came from.
What Audemars Piguet charges to service and document them
Audemars Piguet’s service price list, headed ‘Prices in CHF, taxes excluded’, covers its Geneva boutique. For a Royal Oak it lists complete maintenance of an extra-thin watch at CHF 1,300, about A$2,244. Both references are extra-thin, so that line applies to each. [7][18]
A standard water-resistance service is CHF 450, and refinishing a ‘Watch case with bracelet and buckle’ is CHF 450, about A$777 each. The list adds that it ‘does not preclude’ authorised independent repairers and resellers from ‘freely determining the service prices for final customers’. [7][18]
The same list prices the two documents a seller may offer. An Extract from the Archives is CHF 500, about A$863, and a Certificate of Authenticity (‘Certificate of authentication’ on the price list) is CHF 2,500, about A$4,315. [7][18]
They are not the same thing. Audemars Piguet’s services page calls the Extract an ‘official electronic document’ that confirms the watch’s numbers appear in its records, not that the watch is authentic. Its Certificate of Authenticity covers ‘the watch, its materials and components’, with ‘all identifying characteristics pertaining to the watch as well as current pictures’. Audemars Piguet’s experts in Le Brassus examine the watch first. [19]
So when a seller says the watch comes with papers from Audemars Piguet, establish which document. One confirms a number is in a register. Only the other confirms the watch is genuine.
Bringing one into Australia
If you buy either reference overseas, the Australian Border Force sets out the tax. ‘You must pay 10 per cent of the value of the taxable importation (VoTI)’, which is the sum of the customs value, the international transport and insurance, and any customs duty payable. [20] The costs and the paperwork are set out in our guide to buying a Richard Mille overseas versus in Australia. They work the same way for a Royal Oak.
Choosing between them
Three buyers show how the movement and the dial play out.
- If you rotate several watches, the movement matters most. The 2121 runs for 40 hours and has no quickset date; the 7121 runs for 55 hours and its date sets directly. [2][3][4]
- If you want the 2121 itself, the 15202ST is the one of these two that carries it. Audemars Piguet retired the calibre at the end of 2021. [2]
- If you want a particular dial, a 15202’s year decides it: Grande Tapisserie from 2000 until 2014, Petite Tapisserie from 2012. Both steel 16202ST references, the .01 and the .02, carry Petite Tapisserie. [1][10][11][13]
Four checks then settle the rest before any money moves.
Read the full suffix from the papers
Check the full reference on the papers against the listing, suffix included: the 15202ST suffixes named in this guide are the .01 and the .01.A, and the steel 16202ST is the .01 or the .02. [5][10][11][17]
Confirm the calibre, then the power reserve against it
A 7121 runs 55 hours and has a quickset date; a 2121 runs 40 hours and has neither. A listing that pairs either calibre with the other’s power reserve has copied the wrong figure. [3][4]
Match a 15202’s year to its dial
Ask the year on the papers, then check that the dial carries the Tapisserie of that period. [1][13]
Establish which Audemars Piguet document is included
An Extract from the Archives is a records lookup at CHF 500; the Certificate of Authenticity, at CHF 2,500, follows an examination of the watch in Le Brassus. [18][19]
The guide to buying a pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Australia covers the seller checks for either watch.
HYPA International is an independent, registered Victorian second-hand dealer, Registration No. SHD-0018017, in Melbourne, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or an authorised retailer of any manufacturer named on this website. [22] Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST unless stated otherwise. Payment is by bank transfer only. [21] HYPA lists the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02 and the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01.A in its Audemars Piguet collection. The HYPA terms page and what you receive when you buy from HYPA set out the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 16202ST a limited edition?
No. SJX’s launch report of 27 January 2022 lists the steel Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01 as not a limited edition. That .01 is the ‘50th Anniversary’ version, which Audemars Piguet fits with a ‘50-years’ oscillating weight. The 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02, with the same ‘Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50’ dial, is the current steel reference in Audemars Piguet’s collection. [10][11][12]
What did the 16202ST cost at launch?
The watch press reported launch prices for the steel Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01, the ‘50th Anniversary’ version. SJX gave US$33,200, or S$47,900, on 27 January 2022, about A$47,729 and A$53,784. Monochrome gave EUR 32,400 including taxes on 26 January 2022, about A$52,191. All are converted at the RBA rate of 8 October 2026. Audemars Piguet shows no price for the .01 or the current .02. [7][10][11][12][13]
What does a Royal Oak Jumbo service cost?
Audemars Piguet lists complete maintenance of an extra-thin Royal Oak, such as the 15202ST or 16202ST, at CHF 1,300 in its Geneva boutique, taxes excluded. That is about A$2,244 at the RBA rate of 8 October 2026. A standard water-resistance service and refinishing a case with bracelet and buckle are CHF 450 each, about A$777. Authorised independent repairers set their own prices. [7][18]
