Overview
Twelve unique watches, 1,399 stones each
The RM HJ-02 In-House Automatic Tourbillon is the second RM HJ collection, following the RM HJ-01 of 2020. It comprises twelve one-of-a-kind watches across four colour families — Blue Ballet, Green Gambit, Violet Variations and Pink Pursuit — each presented in three interpretations. Every watch carries 1,399 precious and ornamental stones in a composition unique to it.
Where the RM HJ-01 applied Art Deco geometry to the dial and case surfaces, the RM HJ-02 rebuilds the tonneau itself: the case breaks into sharp transitions, layered planes and asymmetrical interruptions rather than following a single continuous curve. Richard Mille records more than a year on the case architecture alone and over three years on the watch as a whole, with roughly 700 hours of gem-setting per piece — the equivalent of 88 working days.
The photograph shows a blue and turquoise composition on a blue alligator strap, which corresponds to the Blue Ballet family; the tourbillon sits at 6 o’clock and the movement’s own bridges are set.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Calibre CRMT2A skeletonised in-house automatic tourbillon, developed alongside the case and dial rather than fitted to them. Its white gold baseplate and bridges are themselves gem-set, and the oscillating weight is set as well.
- Stone paletteRubies, sapphires in several varieties, diamonds, emeralds, tsavorites and Paraíba tourmalines, alongside ornamental minerals including malachite, chrysoprase, turquoise, sugilite, opal and mother-of-pearl.
- Setting techniquesSnow, grain and bezel setting are used together to organise colour across every surface, the movement included.
- Case architectureA three-dimensional reworking of the tonneau, shaped by deliberate shifts in volume and line, with Art Deco geometry translated into the brand’s material language.
- In-house gem-settingRichard Mille established its own gem-setting workshop in 2019; the RM HJ-02 is worked there from preparation through finishing and quality control.
