Overview
Richard Mille’s first haute joaillerie collection
The RM HJ-01 was presented in 2020 as four exceptional watches, and was the brand’s first dedicated high-jewellery line. It was conceived by Cécile Guenat, Director of Creation and Development, who approached the tonneau case through her background in fine jewellery and an interest in Art Deco — drawing specifically on the period’s decorated cigarette cases, which combined function with luxury, and on its architecture.
Each of the four watches is built around a dominant stone: ruby, blue sapphire, purple sapphire and emerald. Three are cased in white gold and one in red gold. The photograph shows a white gold case pavé-set with diamonds in Art Deco chevrons, worked against red and green baguette-cut stones and black accents, with a gem-set crown centred on a red cabochon and a red leather strap.
The caseback is black ceramic, chosen for its lightness and resistance and for a fine grain that takes a high finish; Richard Mille also cites its heat-sink behaviour, so that the watch sits against the wrist neither hot nor cold.

Design and engineering
- Art Deco architectureThe case and dial are organised around volume, depth, curve and line rather than a single continuous tonneau profile, following the geometry of the period’s decorative objects.
- DialThe diagonal lines are curved inward. A diamond-shaped flange sits just below the crystal and extends the lines of the bezel — an arrangement that reduced the space available for the hands and the movement, and added technical complexity to fitting them.
- Black ceramic casebackSpecified for lightness, resistance and an exceptionally fine grain, and for its thermal behaviour against the wrist: the watch is neither hot nor cold to put on.
- Stone paletteRuby, blue sapphire, purple sapphire and emerald define the four watches. The example photographed combines diamond pavé with red and green baguette-cut stones and black accents.
- Gem-set buckleThe buckle is set to match the case, on a leather strap.
