Overview

Grey Cermet case around an in-house automatic tourbillon

The RM 74-01 was released in 2021 alongside the RM 74-02, the two sharing an ultra-skeletonised automatic tourbillon architecture and differing in the materials of their cases and movements. The RM 74-01 takes the grey Cermet case; its calibre is the CRMT6, whose baseplate and bridges are grade 5 titanium.

Cermet combines a metallic zirconium matrix with a high-performance ceramic, giving a material with the lightness of titanium and the hardness of a ceramic. Richard Mille uses it for the bezels, where scratch resistance matters most, and fits them to a caseband in grade 5 titanium — which is what this record’s "Ti CE-G" suffix encodes. The photograph shows the case in black-grey on a red rubber strap.

The tourbillon sits at 6 o’clock within the frame of the skeletonised movement, and the rotor’s geometry can be varied so that winding matches the wearer.

Design and engineering

  • Calibre CRMT6Skeletonised automatic winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes and a variable-geometry rotor. It measures 30.70 × 23.70 mm with a thickness of 6.20 mm and runs on 23 jewels at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), with around 50 hours of power reserve.
  • Grey Cermet bezelsA metallic zirconium matrix associated with a high-performance ceramic, which gives the material its grey colour. It has a mass-to-volume ratio of 4.1 g/cm³ and a hardness of 2,360 Vickers. Richard Mille developed it with Groupe IMI over several years, eliminating the nickel and cobalt binders usual in this family of materials for a fully REACH-compliant composition, and using flash sintering — conventional hot stamping combined with bursts of high-voltage current that accelerate the sintering. Materials of similar composition are used in ballistic protection, in shuttle re-entry components and in competition brakes. The bezels are affixed to a caseband in grade 5 titanium.
  • Baseplate and bridgesGrade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium — with a PVD treatment. The skeletonised parts were validated separately for strength.
  • Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaCuBe, four arms and four setting weights, moment of inertia 7.5 mg·cm², angle of lift 50°, with an AK3 balance spring and Incabloc 908.22.211.100 shock protection. The regulator index is eliminated in favour of four adjustable weights on the balance.
  • Variable-geometry rotorA heavy outside edge and edge ring in 18K WHITE gold with a platinum weight segment, on the OneWay® ceramic winding system with ball bearings, bidirectional. Two moveable weights are repositioned and fixed with spline screws: closer together, inertia rises and the barrel rewinds more quickly; at the extremities, inertia falls and winding slows.
  • Fast-rotating barrelOne revolution every five hours instead of seven and a half.
  • Gear-teeth profileThe whole going train uses a special profile with a 20° pressure angle, which Richard Mille states equalises discrepancies arising between wheel centres through thermal change and normal use.
  • Case constructionTripartite, water-resistant to 50 m via two nitrile O-ring seals, assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant 316L stainless steel washers.
