Gold Carbon TPT with a red gold caseband

This is the launch execution of the RM 74-02, released in 2021: Gold Carbon TPT® front and back with an 18K 5N red gold caseband, on a black fabric strap. Gold Carbon TPT® interleaves carbon layers with leaves of 24K yellow gold, so that the machined case shows gold striations running through the black composite. Richard Mille records that ensuring the gold fused correctly with the carbon was the principal difficulty in developing it with North Thin Ply Technology.

Inside, the CRMT5’s baseplate is 18K 5N red gold and its bridges 18K 3N yellow gold, where the RM 74-01 uses treated titanium for both.

The RM 74-01 and RM 74-02 were released together in 2021, sharing an ultra-skeletonised automatic tourbillon architecture with the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, and differing in the materials of their cases and of their movements.

Design and engineering

• Calibre CRMT5Skeletonised automatic winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes and a variable-geometry rotor, 30.70 × 23.70 mm by 6.20 mm thick, on 23 jewels at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), with around 50 hours of power reserve.
• Gold Carbon TPT®Some 600 layers of parallel filaments obtained by separating out carbon fibres, each no more than 30 microns thick and impregnated with a black matrix. A dedicated machine stacks them, varying the fibre orientation by 45° between layers and alternating them with layers of 24K yellow gold leaf. The composite is heated to 120°C at 6 bar in a kiln of the type used for aeronautical parts, then machined at Richard Mille.
• Gold baseplate and bridgesThe baseplate is 18K 5N red gold and the bridges 18K 3N yellow gold, both microblasted and bevelled by hand. A bevelled flange with festooned edges follows the lines of the movement.
• Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaCuBe, four arms and four setting weights, moment of inertia 7.5 mg·cm², angle of lift 50°, with an AK3 balance spring and Incabloc 908.22.211.100 shock protection. The regulator index is eliminated in favour of four adjustable weights on the balance.
• Variable-geometry rotorHeavy outside edge and edge ring in 18K red gold with a platinum weight segment, on the OneWay® winding system in ceramic with ball bearings, bidirectional.
• Fast-rotating barrelOne revolution every five hours instead of seven and a half.
• Gear-teeth profileThe whole going train uses a special profile with a 20° pressure angle, which Richard Mille states equalises discrepancies arising between wheel centres through thermal change and normal use.
• Case constructionTripartite, water-resistant to 50 m via two nitrile O-ring seals, assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant 316L stainless steel washers.
