Overview
Banded setting on a white gold case
The mid setting places diamonds in narrow bands across the upper and lower bezel and along the case sides, separated by polished white gold ribs, so that the metal reads as framing between the stones and the case screws stand proud of them. The inner flange is red-gold toned, the pushers black and the crown white.

Design and engineering
- Calibre CRMC1Skeletonised movement with automatic bidirectional winding, hours, minutes, small seconds, date, flyback chronograph, function indicator and stop seconds. It is 6.05 mm thick, runs on 39 jewels at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and provides around 50 hours of power reserve. The separation of the chronograph function from that of daily timekeeping in no way impedes the base movement’s operation when the chronograph is running.
- Mid settingRound brilliant diamonds pavé-set in narrow bands across the upper and lower bezel and the case sides, the bands separated by polished white gold ribs and interrupted by the case screws.
- Flyback chronograph with oscillating pinionsA patented mechanism, making the RM 72-01 the brand’s first in-house chronograph featuring a patented design. Drawing power directly from the barrel to supply the chronograph’s three counters, the energy is transmitted to the chronograph train by two oscillating pinions mounted on rockers, which are activated by a 6-column wheel. The display and the connection to the minutes and hours are thus disengaged from the chronograph’s seconds wheel. The arrangement is less sensitive to disturbance and less voluminous than standard mechanisms.
- Baseplate and bridgesGrade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium — microblasted with a grey electroplasma treatment.
- Platinum rotorBidirectional and compact, allowing efficient winding within the movement’s height.
- Fast-rotating barrelOne revolution every five hours, which Richard Mille specifies for reduced periodic internal mainspring adhesion and smoother power delivery.
- Tripartite caseWater-resistant to 30 m via three nitrile O-ring seals, assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant 316L stainless steel washers.
