Richard Mille RM 72-01 WG Mid Setting
Size
38.40 × 47.34 × 11.68 mm

Overview

Banded setting on a white gold case

The mid setting places diamonds in narrow bands across the upper and lower bezel and along the case sides, separated by polished white gold ribs, so that the metal reads as framing between the stones and the case screws stand proud of them. The inner flange is red gold, the pushers black, the crown white and the strap white rubber.

Mid setting is a coverage tier in Richard Mille’s terminology, between an unset case and a full setting. It says nothing about the cut of the stones, which here are round brilliants throughout.

Design and engineering

  • Calibre CRMC1Skeletonised movement with automatic bidirectional winding, hours, minutes, small seconds, date, flyback chronograph, function indicator and stop seconds. It is 6.05 mm thick, comprises 425 components, runs on 39 jewels at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), and provides around 50 hours of power reserve regardless of how much the chronograph is used.
  • Mid settingRound brilliant diamonds pavé-set in narrow bands across the upper and lower bezel and the case sides, the bands separated by polished white gold ribs and interrupted by the case screws.
  • Flyback chronograph with two oscillating pinionsPatented by Richard Mille and the first chronograph to use two oscillating pinions. The pinions are mounted on rockers actuated by a six-column wheel, and draw power directly from the barrel rather than through the timekeeping gear train, so that the chronograph’s three counters are supplied at the point where torque is greatest and the display is disengaged from the chronograph’s seconds wheel. Richard Mille specifies the arrangement as thinner than a vertical clutch and less sensitive to disturbance.
  • Baseplate and bridgesGrade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium — microblasted with a grey electroplasma treatment.
  • Platinum rotorBidirectional and compact, allowing efficient winding within the movement’s height.
  • Fast-rotating barrelOne revolution every five hours, which Richard Mille specifies for reduced periodic internal mainspring adhesion and smoother power delivery.
  • Tripartite case38.40 × 47.34 × 11.68 mm, water-resistant to 30 m via three nitrile O-ring seals, assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant 316L stainless steel washers.
