Overview
A tourbillon with a mechanical odometer, built for cycling
The RM 70-01 Tourbillon Alain Prost was released in 2017 in a limited edition of 30 pieces, developed with the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, a keen cyclist. Its distinguishing function is a mechanical odometer: a totaliser that records the distance a rider has covered, up to 99,999 kilometres.
The odometer is set by hand. The pusher at 2 o’clock selects one of five rollers, whose readout appears in a titanium window; the pusher at 10 o’clock then advances the selected roller by one. The rider adds the day’s distance to the running total.
The case is asymmetric and curved to be worn on the right wrist, so that it neither presses into the forearm over long hours in the saddle nor obstructs a reading of the time while the hands are on the handlebars.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Calibre RM70-01Manual winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes, power-reserve indicator and mechanical odometer, with 70 hours of power reserve indicated at 5 o’clock. The baseplate and bridges are grade 5 titanium.
- Vertical architectureThe barrel and tourbillon are aligned on a single axis, which keeps the movement compact enough to leave room for the odometer.
- Odometer operationFive rollers, selected by the pusher at 2 o’clock and advanced by the pusher at 10 o’clock, with the readout visible in a titanium window. The mechanism can also be used to mark set dates or times rather than distances.
- Cycling referencesTitanium Allen screws secure the bridges; the barrel ratchet follows the design of forged wheel spokes; the tourbillon carriage and the dynamometric crown are shaped after a bicycle pedal.
- Asymmetric Carbon TPT® caseCombining tonneau, rectangular and asymmetric forms, curved so that it sits away from the wrist when worn on the right hand.
- Accompanying bicycleEach buyer received a bespoke road cycle, hand-built and individually numbered by Colnago and painted in Richard Mille’s colours.
