Overview
A white case on a record that says Carbon TPT
The photograph shows an RM 57-03 with a white case, a black inner flange and a red gold crown, on a black rubber strap. The record labels the material White Carbon TPT.
Carbon TPT® is made from divided carbon fibre threads and is black or grey; Richard Mille does not produce it in white. The white TPT composite in the brand’s material set is Quartz TPT®, made by the same layering process from silica. The label therefore cannot be right — but the photograph shows a smooth surface with no visible striation, which is not what a layered composite looks like either. The material is left open rather than exchanged for a different guess.
The dial is the standard RM 57-03 sculpture: a sapphire dragon body joined to solid red gold head, tail, limbs and spine, red-painted tongue and eyes, and a ruby endstone at the tourbillon.
Key details
Design and engineering
- What is not establishedThe label reads White Carbon TPT and Carbon TPT® is not produced in white. Quartz TPT® is the brand’s white composite, but the case shows none of the striation a TPT material carries and could as easily be ceramic. Nothing is entered for the material.
- Calibre RM57-03Manual winding tourbillon indicating hours and minutes, on a grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges, running at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) with a 48-hour power reserve.
- TPT® composite constructionFilaments are divided into layers — a maximum of 30 microns for carbon, no thicker than 45 for silica — stacked with the fibre orientation rotated between plies and consolidated under heat and pressure before CNC machining. The layering produces a striated surface pattern that differs on every case. Carbon TPT® uses carbon fibre threads; Quartz TPT® uses silica threads and can be produced in white and other colours.
- Sapphire dragonThe body sections are machined and polished from a block of sapphire by the Geneva engraving house Olivier Vaucher, who developed a polishing process for the material, then joined to solid red gold parts forming the head, tail, limbs and spine.
- Red-painted detailThe dragon’s tongue and eyes are hand-painted red, matching the ruby endstone of the tourbillon, which is set in a rose gold chaton.
- Three-part tonneau caseThree-part tonneau case measuring 42.70 mm across and 14.55 mm thick, with sapphire crystals front and back and a water resistance of 50 m. The crown is red gold.
