The sapphire case — five pieces within the edition
Of the 55 RM 57-03 Tourbillon Sapphire Dragon watches produced for Asia, five carry a case made from sapphire rather than Carbon TPT®. This is that version: a transparent three-part case with a black flange and yellow markings, gold hands, and a white translucent strap.
Sapphire is aluminium oxide, rated 1,800 Vickers and 9 on the Mohs scale, and can be worked only with diamond tooling. Inside, the dragon repeats the material logic of the case: a body carved from sapphire, joined to solid red gold head, tail, limbs and spine, with the tongue and eyes hand-painted red.

Design and engineering
- Sapphire caseThe three case components are machined and ground from sapphire. The material’s hardness makes machining slow and requires diamond-tipped tooling.
- Calibre RM57-03Manual winding tourbillon indicating hours and minutes, on a grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges, running at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) with a 48-hour power reserve.
- Sapphire dragonThe body sections are machined and polished from a block of sapphire by the Geneva engraving house Olivier Vaucher, who developed a polishing process for the material, then joined to solid red gold parts forming the head, tail, limbs and spine.
- Red-painted detailThe dragon’s tongue and eyes are hand-painted red, matching the ruby endstone of the tourbillon, which is set in a rose gold chaton.
- Three-part tonneau caseThree-part tonneau case measuring 42.70 mm across and 14.55 mm thick, with sapphire crystals front and back and a water resistance of 50 m.
- Case and sculpture in one materialThe dragon’s body and the case are cut from the same substance, so the sculpture reads as continuous with its housing rather than framed by it.
