Overview

Carbon TPT® bezel with red Quartz TPT® caseback and gradient caseband

The RM 16-01 Fraise belongs to the Fruits line of the Bonbon Collection, shown by Richard Mille in 2019. The front bezel is Carbon TPT®, the caseback red Quartz TPT®, and the caseband a gradient of the two materials running from bezel to caseback. Quartz TPT® is produced by the same layering process as Carbon TPT® but from silica threads, which allows the colour to be introduced into the matrix.

The dial is grade 5 titanium with grey Titalyt® treatment. The candy forms applied to it are painted in acrylic and lacquered by hand, with a sugar-coating effect obtained from powdered enamel and the fine sand used in hourglasses. Across the ten-model collection, 3,000 miniature sculptures were produced by this method. A date aperture is carried on the dial.

Design and engineering

  • Carbon TPT® and Quartz TPT®Both materials are built from layers of filament — carbon for Carbon TPT®, silica for Quartz TPT® — impregnated with resin and laid at alternating angles before heating and pressure-forming. Machining cuts through the layers, producing the visible banding.
  • Gradient casebandThe caseband is formed from a block combining both materials, so the transition from the Carbon TPT® bezel to the red Quartz TPT® caseback occurs within a single component rather than at a joint.
  • Dial in grade 5 titaniumThe dial plate is machined and skeletonised in the manner of a movement component, then given a grey Titalyt® treatment. The candy figures sit on this plate rather than on a printed surface.
  • Hand-applied decorationEach candy is painted with acrylic paint and lacquered by hand. The sugar effect is a separate operation using powdered enamel and hourglass sand.
  • Bonbon Collection structureTen models were produced across three references — RM 07-03, RM 16-01 and RM 37-01 — split between a Fruits line, with Carbon TPT®/Quartz TPT® gradient cases, and a Sweets line in two-tone ceramic. Each model was made in 30 pieces. Richard Mille records 18 months of development for the collection and a palette of 60 colours.
